Adventure Activities in Trujillo

Hiking

Hiking along the beach to Campamento, the Garifuna fishing villages of Santa Fe, San Antonio, or Guadeloupe is easy, but you will have to wade across numerous small waterways that enter the ocean.  Inquire as to the distance at which you think you may be comfortable.  It’s about 10 kilometers to Santa Fe, and several more kilometers to San Antonio and Guadeloupe.

Adventure Activities in Trujillo

Boardwalk

Hiking in the national park above the town is beautiful and cooling as you reach the top at about 4,000 feet in altitude.  The summit is a cloud forest environment.  You should hear or see macaws, monkeys, giant ferns, orchids, and abundant other flowers.  There is a small entrance pavilion just above the town, but nowadays it is empty.  The less adventurous can drive to the top if it has not been raining too hard and you have a four wheel vehicle, or at least a vehicle with good clearance.  Or hike through the villages and see what they have to offer, a bit of history, nature,  traditions and local artisans.

La Cascada de Río Negro

La Cascada de Rio Negro The short hike to La Cascada de Río Negro is a pleasant excursion. On the road into Trujillo, turn at the ‘Mahogany & Cacao Reforestation & Research Facility’ sign, circle behind the stadium and then turn right down a dead-end street. Veer right down a dirt road and through a gate; where the road bends rights, look for a small path with a water tube partially buried in the middle. Follow the path (and the tube) about 1km to the falls.

Artisma Garifuna This place offers a good selection of Garifuna handicrafts and souvenirs.  Try some Guifiti (Garifuna-brewed fire water).

Museo Riveras del Pedregal has a huge collection of antiques and artifacts, ranging from the wacky to the sublime.reviewed Regguetón, merengue and Latin rock keep the locals moving from 8pm until the early morning hours. Thursday night is karaoke night.

2 Tumbas

The Old Cemetary  in the center of town is evocative and has the grave of the legendary adventurer, William Walker. His grave has a cross with his name and the epitaph “fusilado”—meaning “shot by firing squad”. Behind the hospital, and accessible from the fort is the spot where they shot Walker, and nowadays it sports a small monument. For those intrepid tourists continuing on to Nicaragua, be aware that in Granada, Nicaragua they make a very big deal of the famous Mr. Walker, possibly because he burned down the town when he was chased out. Of course he ended up in Trujillo, where he was captured and shot.

Ziplining- Canopy Tours for the more adventurous, there is nothing like floating high in the rain forest, sliding above the canopy at a good clip.  Trujillo’s lagoon is a tourist area you can adventure into the caves and at the entrance to the lagoon they have kayaks and paddle boats for rent for you to enjoy nature from the water.

Snorkeling/Diving/Windsurfing  The bay has several good places to go snorkeling. Cayo Blanco and the Banco de Estrellas Marinas (Sea Star Bank) are the best spots, with a healthy coral reef teaming with fish, starfish (Starfish Sandbar) and the occasional turtle. The folks at C&R Campamento offer snorkeling trips for up to eight people, equipment included, or go snorkeling around one of the many sunken ships or the coral reefs of Cayo Blanco. Or to be atop of the water windsurfing  and kayaking are also available.

Gold Mining- Rich with natural minerals you cannot pass up a bit of panning for gold.  Pan for gold in the Bay of Trillijo, surely there will be a local to help you out.

Hot Springs- After a long day of adventure there is nothing like total relaxation in the hot springs.  Hotel Aguas Calientes in Silin, a community just three kilometers from Trujillo is where you can wind down in the hot springs and receive a natural herb and oil massage.
